Beach House Bliss

Hello everyone,  I hope you all had a fantastic holiday weekend!  On Sunday Hubby and I spent the day at the beach soaking up the sun and swimming in the ocean.  For those of you who also live on the East Coast, you know that we have some pretty gorgeous beach houses along our shores.  Every time I go to the beach I love to admire these beautiful homes.  My favorites are the Cape Cod style ones with  weathered shingles, white painted windows, and a warmth that makes you feel right at home.  This beauty is a little more grandiose than the traditional Cape Cod style home, but I can certainly imagine myself relaxing on the porch, sipping some lemonade and feeling the salty ocean breeze in my hair...

Reception Seating Help

When I was planning my wedding and it came time for me to figure out the table layout for our reception, I became extremely overwhelmed and stressed.  96 year old Aunt Thelma won't want to sit close to the DJ, this friend doesn't know that friend, so-and-so doesn't like so-and-so...blah blah blah!  If you are in the middle of planning your wedding and have thought about the seating, I'm sure you have some idea of what I'm talking about.  It can become a huge headache!  So, to make the long story short, I needed to come up with a way to figure out who was sitting where without creating more work for myself.  I read about this idea in a bridal magazine (Can't remember which one) and I adapted it slightly so that it made sense for myself.

The photos above are from our actual wedding!  I made the place cards myself by printing, stamping and embossing them.  My lovely aunt put together the gorgeous flower arrangements to create a rustic, yet romantic and elegant feeling for the event.  On each plate sits a small jar of homemade berry jam from my mom for guests to take for their favors.

Forever Lovely

This is the system that I used to organize the reception seating for our guests.  It worked out perfectly for me because I was able to visualize where everyone would sit and with the sticky notes I could move people easily without making a whole new layout.  Here are the directions!

  • On a large poster board use a round stencil to create circles for however many tables you will be having to seat your guests at your event. (I used a flower pot)  They do not have to be laid out perfectly, but do the best you can with imitating the actual layout of the room.
  • Number or name each table according to how they will be at the actual event.
  • For those of your guests who have already RSVP'd make a sticky note tab with their first and last name on it.  I used regular square sticky notes and cut them into strips.  Pink for the ladies and green for the gents.
  • I laid my sticky notes out in rows before I assigned them to tables so that I could see what I was working with.
  • Play around with who will sit where and If it won't work, simply pull up the sticky note and move it somewhere else.
  • When you are finished, record your seating arrangement on a separate piece of paper or a computer chart.
Thats all there is to it!  Remember to make sure there aren't too many or too few guests at each table.  The tables at my wedding ranged from 7 to 10 guests per table.  Take into account where the dance floor and DJ will be located in the room, as well as doors, walk ways etc.  I hope this helps out the stressful process of seating your guests!  Email me if you have any questions!

Creative Organization

The Tea Cup Tree

I don't know about you, but I love when my things are organized.  I feel like I can function in my home and get so much more accomplished when I'm surrounded by organization.  There are so many creative ideas for organizing these days and what's even better is that most of them look pretty as well!  Check out these awesome ways to organize.

I love this creative way to store ribbon!  You can see everything you have and they won't unravel on their own.  Genius!

Poppy Talk

Cute labels to organize bathroom items.  No confusion here!

Martha Stewart

Grommets added to dish towel and gloves for better storage and an uncluttered sink area.

Whisker Graphics

Use a sugar dispenser to hold a roll of twine.  These items look like they were made for each other!

Storage Glee

Sheet sets stored in their own pillow cases is probably easier said than done, but it takes up less cabinet space and looks great none the less!

Unplggd

Labeled plastic tabs are used to identify plugs, you wont hear "Hey who turned out the lights?!" ever again! :)

Have a great weekend!

Navy Blue Walls

Navy Blue is one of my favorite colors to wear and I love the way it looks when it is brought into home decor, but when it is painted on walls it looks so fresh and elegant, yet bold and unexpected.  You have to be a little brave when choosing this color for your walls, but I think the impact that it makes in a space is beautiful!  Check out these lovely navy blue interiors.

How to Decorate a Fireplace Mantel

For many people, decorating their fireplace mantel can be quite confusing.  You might be struggling with the fine line between layered decor and a cluttered look, the right way to balance certain items, or even just where to begin with the whole process.  Don't worry!  There is not really one perfectly right way to decorate your mantel.  What's important is that you feel like the arrangement of your decor looks right to YOU.   As you are decorating, step back every couple of minutes and admire what you are doing to see if you are headed in the right direction.  The hardest part is getting started, and if you want to get technical, there actually are some rules when it comes to decorating a spot like this.  Although, breaking these rules is always fun too :)

Young House Love

The first guideline I will talk about is symmetrical decor.  Symmetrical means that if you were to fold this photo in half, each side would be nearly identical.  This is the easiest way, in my opinion, because it doesn't require as much planning as other designs would.  In the photo above you can see that the focal point of the fireplace are the two framed prints hanging side by side in the center of the wall.  On either side are two vases holding foliage, both arrangements are the same on either side.  The little wooden bird statues are balanced out on either side, one side has two birds and the other side has one bird and the letter "L".  Although either side in this case is not exactly the same, they are balanced symmetrically.

House Beautiful

Here is another beautiful example of symmetrical mantel decor.  What makes this space interesting is that although the fireplace mantel decor is perfectly symmetrical, the chairs in front of the fireplace are not.  The chair to the right has more visual weight because of the cushions, but the chair to the left balances the look when combined with the little pillow and ceramic stool.  Lovely!

The next guideline is asymmetrical decor.  In this design, the piece in the center of the wall creates a focal point and is accessorized with the potted topiaries to the left.  Since there are no items on the right side of the mantel, this decor is considered asymmetrical.  When creating this type of design, make sure that your furniture in front of the fireplace is arranged symmetrically, like the chairs in the photo, so that the look will appear balanced.

Another example of asymmetry.  The items decorating the mantel itself are arranged asymmetrically, but the sconces on either side of the fireplace balance out this look.  This photo is one of my favorites!  The decor is very elegant and I love the pop of purple that the flowers add.

The Lettered Cottage

This next look is not necessarily a guideline, but I'm loving the layered look!  This mantel is a good example of how to layer your decor without it looking cluttered.  Although there are many items decorating this space, the look is balanced out by the foliage in pitchers on each side and the plates hanging on the wall. Layla from The Lettered Cottage created this look herself with thrift store finds and a little DIY work.  The pitchers were all different colors so she spray painted them all white for this beautiful cohesive look.  Genius!  When creating this look, make sure that your decor items are balanced.  They don't have to be an exact pair, like the pitchers and rattan plates above, but it's best if they are similar in color and size.  For more info on how to create the look you see here, head over to The Lettered Cottage.

I love this layered look!  The frames on either side of the mantel not only make a lovely focal point of the fireplace, but they also balance out the look of the mantel decor.

Google

Instead of a frame or mirror being the center focal point of the fireplace, the potted branches are the centerpiece here!  The layered look is balanced by the four items on the right and by the painting on the left.  Beautiful and original!

House and Home

When creating this layered look, think of arranging your decor in the shape of a triangle.  There should be one tall centerpiece in the middle, and two smaller pieces on either side that are similar in size to each other.  Here we see that carried out by the tall print in the middle, the horns on the left and the frame on the right.  Notice that the height of the horns and the frame on the right are the same.  Fill in the open space with even smaller items and your look is complete!

These guidelines are only here to get you started or to help you along the way.  If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home, decorate it in a way that works for you and makes you happy. :)

Have a Great Weekend!

Color Inspiration- Chartreuse and Navy

Besides the fact that green is my favorite color, I think that chartreuse green and navy blue look fabulous together.  I have always loved the way blue and green look together, but there is something special about the brightness of the chartreuse combined with the dark, richness of the navy.  You can use this color scheme anywhere, in your home, your wedding or event, or in your wardrobe!  It's a lovely, fresh look for spring and summer.

Okay so she isn't wearing any navy, but her outfit was too cute not to post!  Proof that chartreuse also goes with black leather :)

International Inspiration- Capri

Today we are sailing over to the Italian island of Capri where stunning turquoise waters meet mountains that ascend into the sky.  Where grape vines wind their way through arbors, white plaster buildings climb steep hillsides and sunsets end the day with vibrant shades of tangerine.
